In April, missionaries bent on converting the pagans arrived from New England. The missionaries clothed the natives, banned them from dancing the hula, and nearly dismantled their ancient culture.


1821

Spanish Florida

'La Florida' was sold by Spain to the US for $5 million. The territory's first governor as General Jackson. He declared the 7,000 Seminole Indians inhabiting the territory a handicap to Florida's development and attacked driving them further south.

Cuba

US forces made numerous landings in Cuba to pursue pirates. This continued through 1825 when in March cooperating US and British forces landed at Sagua la Grande to capture pirates.

USA

Nicholas Biddle became the Second Bank's president. He was also referred to as "Tsar Nickolas" because of his autocratic style.

Puerto Rico

Commodore David Porter and a landing party of 200 attacked the town of Fajardo, in Spanish territory, Puerto Rico for sheltering pirates and insulting American naval officers. Commodore Porter was later court-martialed for overstepping his authority.

USA

The recession known as the Panic of 1819 came to an end.
